A BULLETIN FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF HEALTH MINISTRY
Q&A:
1. Q-What is health ministry within a parish?
A-Parish Nursing is the intentional integration of faith with the practice of Nursing.
2. Q-What is a Parish Nurse?
A-A parish Nurse is a licensed registered nurse (RN) who practices in a faith community. St. Augustine has three Parish Nurses. A Faith Community Nurse (FCN) has completed the Basic Parish Nurse Preparation Course. This course includes the history, philosophy, roles and function of the parish nurse, the role of the church in health, how to function as a member of the pastoral team, health promotion and maintenance, documentation, accountability, confidentiality, legal considerations, spiritual care, how to access community resources, assist congregational members to gain/maintain optimal mental, physical, and spiritual health.
They work within their own church to provide education, health and counseling, disease prevention and other duties as directed by their congregation and pastor.
3. Q-Where will I find health supplies?
A-A first aid kit and AED with a blood pressure cuff can be found near the baptismal pool on the back wall leading to the sacristy.
A first aid kit, a blood pressure cuff, a blood glucose monitor, and aspirin is locked in the nurse's office. A trauma first aid kit is locked in the
men's club room. The trauma kit contains eye wash, burn ointment, splints, large gauze and wraps, etc.
4. IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN TRAINED ON EQUIPMENT, DO NOT ATTEMPT USE IT. If you would like to be trained, contact the church office. Your request will be forwarded to a member of Health Ministry.
TIPS TO REMEMBER:
-If a person faints, becomes suddenly weak, nauseous, disoriented, dizzy, or vomits, DO NOT
GIVE THEM ANYTHING BY MOUTH!
-Registered Nurses are REQUIRED BY LAW to render assistance and are trained to do so when someone becomes sick or disabled in their presence. St. Augustine is blessed with a number of registered nurses. If an incident happens with a person at mass or on church property please allow the nurses to do as they are trained. If a MD is available, he or she takes charge.
If a person is lucid, in no immediate distress, has no hemorrhaging, no broken bones, and has asked you NOT to call an ambulance or 911, DO NOT CALL. The person and their family have the right to make that decision.
For more information you may contact Mrs. Helen Oliver at [email protected] or call/text 901-216-6427. God Bless!
